Neon Abyss 2 Characters: Every Playable Agent & Hatchmon

Meet every Neon Abyss 2 character: playable Agents like James, Lucia, R7 and Xuan, plus Hatchmon companions, Wonder Jars and the Agent Dossier system.

Wondering who you can play as in Neon Abyss 2? The game's playable roster is made up of Agents — mercenaries who dive into the Abyss — and it now includes James, Lucia, R7, Xuan, Mira, a random Agent labeled "???", and more added around the 1.0 launch on October 8, 2026. Every Agent fights alongside Hatchmon companions that hatch from eggs you collect during runs.

This guide covers every Neon Abyss 2 character that has been confirmed in official posts and community documentation, how the newer Agents are unlocked, what the 1.0 Agent Dossier system does, and how your pet companions work. Anything we could not verify against the source material is marked "To be confirmed" rather than guessed.

Neon Abyss 2 characters and Agents diving into the Abyss

Who Are the Playable Agents?

Agents are the playable characters of Neon Abyss 2. Each one dives into the Abyss as part of the game's roguelite structure, and in the 1.0 full release they can also be brought into four-player online co-op, where each player controls their own Agent. The developers at Veewo consistently address the community as "Agents" in their patch notes and forum replies, and the 1.0 announcement was framed around sending "a new wave of Agents" into the Abyss.

Every Agent plays with their own exclusive skills. The 1.0 Agent Dossier system (more on that below) is the in-game place to review exactly what each character's signature abilities do. Beyond skills, characters differ in how they interact with the game's systems: for example, community tier-list work on the Faith system notes that James innately earns more weapon shards than anyone else, which makes weapon-focused Faiths noticeably stronger on him.

The roster grew over the Early Access period and continued to grow through 1.0. The names below are the ones that verifiably appear in official materials and community guides; the full headcount of the launch roster is To be confirmed.

Every Confirmed Agent So Far

Based on official announcements, developer posts, and community unlock guides, these Agent names are confirmed:

  • James — noted in community Faith tier lists as the character who innately collects more weapon shards, synergizing with weapon-level Faith builds.
  • Lucia — featured in an official Veewo design document (published on the studio's notion site as "Lucia Design"), one of the few Agents with a public design breakdown.
  • R7 — unlock condition reported by the community: run R7 in Rush mode and choose a shield room to complete the associated achievement task.
  • Xuan — unlock condition reported by the community: have 10 violet orbs (dark spirits) active at once to complete the associated task.
  • Mira — confirmed by name in Steam community discussions about character achievements.
  • ??? (Random Agent) — added in 1.0. Using this Agent turns you into a randomly chosen Agent at the start of the run and grants one bonus relic for a little extra surprise each dive.

A couple of caveats for accuracy. First, the R7 and Xuan unlock steps above come from community reports of the achievement tasks, not from an official unlock guide, so treat them as reliable but not authoritative. Second, several character-related achievements were bugged during Early Access; the developers stated that achievement issues would be automatically fixed once version 1.0 went live on October 8, and that completed conditions would auto-unlock. If an unlock seems stuck, first make sure your game is updated to 1.0 or later.

Exact skill kits for each character (damage values, passive effects) are To be confirmed in written form — the Agent Dossier in-game is the authoritative source.

The Agent Dossier System (New in 1.0)

Version 1.0 introduced a brand-new Agent Dossier system, and it changes how you plan runs around your Neon Abyss 2 characters. According to the official 1.0 patch notes, the Dossier lets you view each Agent's exclusive skills, their boss kill records, and their highest Fate value. It effectively becomes a stat page and trophy case for every character you play.

Alongside the Dossier, the objectives page now includes a boss route map that shows challenge routes, node details, and unlock states, so you can plan which bosses to chase next with which character. This pairs well with the boss unlock chain covered in our bosses guide — if you are hunting a specific Titan god, the Dossier tells you which Agent is closest to that fight.

The Random Agent ("???") also feeds into this system: because it transforms you into a random character and hands you a bonus relic, it is a low-commitment way to fill in kill records across the roster. If you are working on character-specific achievements or Dossier entries, rotating through "???" runs is a sensible habit.

Hatchmons: Your Companion Pets

Your Agent does not dive alone. Hatchmons are baby companions that hatch from eggs you collect after clearing combat rooms, and each egg hatches a random type. Community documentation of the system describes them as fully-fledged companions: they have their own health bar, distinct attack styles (auto-shoot, melee, or shielding), and they can level up every two to three rooms to grow stronger.

The headline mechanic is fusion. In Neon Abyss 2, unlocking two duplicate Hatchmons lets you combine them into a Super Pet. Super Pets keep their original skills and add unique bonus effects — community-documented examples include double shots, explosive area attacks, and stronger shields. If you are building around pets, always aim to fuse: two of the same type is the key that opens the Super Pet tier.

One practical warning from that same community guide: mind the blast radius. Explosions and friendly fire can kill your own Hatchmons, so positioning matters, especially in tight rooms. Community tier-list work on the Faith system also notes that one character starts with a Hatchmon implicitly, and that egg/Hatchmon-related artifacts, curios, and weapons are extremely plentiful in the current version — which is why pet-centric starts are considered among the strongest available right now.

A full Hatchmon-to-Super-Pet combination table exists in community guides (covering pets like Adam, Alien Baby, Fire Devil and others); we are not reproducing the full table here until we can verify it against official sources.

Wonder Jars and Choosing Your Agent

Wonder Jars are another companion-adjacent system worth knowing. These jars are picked up during runs, and the official FAQ explains the controls plainly: press Q to take a jar out or put it away, and press F (on standard keyboard controls) to unleash its power. Many Early Access players missed this because the game never explained it — now you know.

As for picking a character, the honest answer is that every confirmed Agent is viable, and the biggest early differences come from how a character's kit feeds the Faith system and your chosen build. If you like weapon evolution playstyles, James's innate weapon shard bonus is a documented edge. If you want variety, "???" gives you a random Agent plus a free relic. And if you are chasing powerful pet builds, prioritize egg and Hatchmon synergies regardless of who you pick.

Since 1.0, achievement retro-unlocks and character unlocks should behave correctly, so new players can start fresh without worrying about the Early Access save issues.
